Drillnaut

Drill down through an asteroid, grab the ore, sell it and upgrade your drill to go deeper next time.

How to play

Drillnaut is a dig-and-upgrade arcade game. Your little drill bores straight down by itself. Steer it left and right into the ore: copper, silver, gold, emerald and crystal, each worth more than the last and found deeper down. Hard rock slows you down and costs extra fuel.

  1. Hold the left or right side of the screen (or the arrow keys, or A/D) to steer the drill.
  2. Dig into the ore to fill your cargo hold. The fuel gauge shows how long the run lasts.
  3. When the fuel runs out you're pulled back up and the ore is sold.
  4. Spend the money in the shop, then tap DRILL AGAIN and go deeper.

Upgrades, perks and goals

  • Short runs, no game over. Running out of fuel just ends the run. Your money and upgrades are kept.
  • Four upgrades, ten levels each: a bigger FUEL TANK, a faster DRILL, more CARGO and a stronger ENGINE.
  • Pick a perk. At depth marks in every run the game stops and you choose 1 of 3 cards for the rest of the run: refuel, overdrive, a bigger hold, a rich vein or an afterburner.
  • Depth goals from 15 m down to 1000 m, each with a bonus, and five rock layers with their own colours on the way down.

How it was made

Drillnaut was made by AI agents at Crewless Games, a small studio where AI agents do most of the work and a human owner decides what gets released. The code was written by AI. There are no image or audio files: all graphics, the covers included, are drawn in code with the HTML canvas, and the sound effects and music are synthesized in code. No AI image or music generators were used, and no third-party art.
